Deciding how you want to process orders

There is really no limit on how you can handle the checkout process for your store so read the following choices carefully to determine which method is best for you.
  • Non-secure: Using your existing web hosting ISP you can configure the cart to use one of our two free form mailers to process orders via email. You will need to make sure that the proper permissions are set by your ISP for your cgi-bin folder (usually a sub-folder under your web documents folder, ask your web hosting ISP if you have a CGI folder and/or if CGI is allowed or included with your particular web hosting plan.)

  • Secure form/email delivery: Alternatively you can install your entire cart on a secure server provided by your web hosting ISP or other source and use the free form mailers to send an unsecure email to process the order offline.

  • Secure form and log file: You may also install your entire cart on a secure server and save the form contents to a file to be retrieved later via FTP to process the order offline using bFormMail or Comments.exe. These are just two methods to capture the order info to a log file. There are many other scripts available that will allow you to do this.

  • Secure Order Provider: By far the most popular method is to use a third party “Secure Order Provider” as listed on our list of Supported Gateways. If the provider you use is not listed in our dialog you might consider submitting it via our Gateway Submission form.

Server Type

If you plan on using the space that your site resides on at your web hosting ISP’s server choose between NT or UNIX. If you don’t know if your web host’s server is NT or UNIX try this simple test.
Go to your cart URL on your site. After you have opened the cart change the address in the browser window from http://www.yoursite.com/cart to http://www.yoursite.com/CART (notice “CART” has been changed to upper case.) Hit enter (or press Go.)

If your cart still loads then your web host’s server is running NT. Click on the NT radio button.

If you get a 404 - File Not Found error then your web host’s server is running UNIX. Click on the UNIX radio button.
If you plan on using a secure order provider then select the Order Provider radio button.

Secure Order Provider menu

If you selected Order Provider as your server type this menu will be activated and you can choose the order provider you wish to use. Each of the secure order providers listed have their own RealCart™ compatible “pay.html” and will be configured with your merchant ID when you rebuild or publish the cart to your site.

Look for updates to the list of secure order providers on the site. We will be adding more secure order providers as they are made known to us.

Merchant ID

If you selected Order Provider as your server type you will need to specify your merchant ID here as assigned by your secure order provider. (This field is not available if you are using your own web space to process orders.)

Form URL

The “Form URL” is normally accurate as filled in by RealCart and there is usually no need to change it. Unless you have been instructed to change this setting by your Secure Order Provider (payment gateway) or RealCart technical support you should probably leave it alone.

An example “Form URL” would be http://www.yourcompany.com/cgi-bin/rscmail.exe (This is the default Form URL for NT Servers NOT using a secure order provider.

Email Host

If you are processing orders on your web host’s NT Server then you will also need to specify the SMTP mail server that handles mail for your domain’s IP address. Typically users will mistake this for their dialup ISP’s SMTP server name. Unless your dialup ISP *is* your web host this server address will likely be different than the one you are using for your email.

Secure Server URL

If your web hosting ISP or some other source provides you with space on a secure server and you wish to use that space to install your shopping cart enter the base address (of your folder) of the secure server here.

If you do not know what this is or if you are not going to install the cart on a secure server then just leave this field blank.

Examples:

https://server11.hypermart.net/tmpco
https://realwebguy.safeserver.com/realcart

Deciding which Checkout method to use becomes easier when you determine how serious you are about selling online. Accepting credit cards, for example, can increase your sales by up to 80% or more.
